On-farm Oilseed Crushing/Biodiesel Energy Systems

The renewable electricity utilized on the farm is generated through a hybrid system. The wind/solar provides a portion and a biodiesel fueled generator provides high intensity, short duration power as required. As a result, overall system costs were drastically reduced compared to going wind/solar alone.

In order to obtain biodiesel being consumed on the farm in line with energy self-reliance principles, it would have to come from the raw materials able to be reasonably produced in the area, using renewable energy inputs only. These come from oilseeds we crush with screw presses and fats, rendered from the livestock we raise to use for biodiesel feedstock as well. The chicken fat biodiesel was especially nice with the superior gel point qualities compared to pork and beef. Despite claims by others, the Energy Farm is the first place state licensed commercial B-100 was produced in Nebraska in Aug, 2005. The Energy Farm will undoubtedly remain on the cutting edge of developments in the future.
